Most people probably don't realize that before they were Cage the Elephant, Matt Shultz, Brad Shultz, and Jared Champion (respectively singer, guitarist, and drummer for the bands) were involved in Perfect Confusion. I was absolutely thrilled to find more CTE-esque music, and wasn't disappointed with what the only Perfect Confusion album delivered.
Perfect Confusion sounds a lot like Cage the Elephant, with a sound that's just slightly less refined. The drums are as rocking and interesting as ever- Jared Champion is definitely one of the best new drummers out there. The sound of the music is filled with a lot of slide guitar, giving it that slightly Southern feel. All of the guitar work is amazing. Everything sounds raw, but not under produced. In fact, this album comes across as very professional. Over all of this sound are the scintillating lyrics of Matt. At first he appears calm, but he gets angry and excited about things, which makes the listener just as excited. His words just flow off the tongue.
All in all, it's a pretty awesome experience, and not to be missed by anyone enjoys this type of raw punk rock sound. Stand out tracks include 'Live for the Day', a full-strength rock anthem, 'Beat Your Ear Drums,' and 'Autumn Breeze', a wonderfully tasty, slightly mellower track. There's really not a bad song on the album, though.
