Julien-K includes two members of the band Orgy, and their music seems to expand on the ideas presented in that previous band. In their album Death to Analog, a quality range of rocking electronic music can be found.
Julien-K is one of the most artistic bands I know of, which is why I first got into them. They have the best stage setups, merch, and their CDs look great, visually. Their music, though, leaves a little to be desired. That's not to say theyre not quality musicians. On Death to Analog, the guitar and keyboard work is unique and unusual and completely engrossing. The drumming is really innovative, but also solid, providing the strong backbeat and groove these techno type songs need. Ryan Shuck, the vocalist, has a wonderfully strong voice. It's rich and his melodies always fit really well with the music of the song. However, there are few hooks here. Nothings catchy. It's a little difficult to immerse yourself in these songs.
Once I did get into the album, I found that about half the songs were great and the other half were too hard to get involved with. I love 'Death to Analog', which seems to go on forever, but is still great, 'Kick the Bass', and 'Someday Soon', which are just well written, rocking songs. 'Maestro' and 'Forever' show a more emotional side, creating a slightly different feel. 'Look At You' is probably the catchiest song on the album.
