The Undertones sailed closest to the wind of powerpop with this classic. "Jimmy Jimmy" combined a simple yet effective riff with a standard straight-up invitation to pogo rhythm. The result was mesmerising and can still get any foot tapping today from someone who first heard the song when it was initially released. Yet the theme of the song was a very un-punk one of the sad tale of Little Jimmy who was taken away to hospital never to be seen again. Allegedly drawn from a real-life incident familiar to the band members, it is not hard to see why this was one of the late John Peel's favourite tracks. I wonder what Peel would think of the fact that Feargal Sharkey is now the chief mouthpiece of the record companies railing against illegal downloading and file-sharing?
