"Sweet Home Chicago" is one of the most widely known blues songs of Robert Johnson, perhaps because it has been the subject of so many covers for so many other artists, as well, perhaps, the ironic inspiration behind Lynyrd Skynyrd's "Sweet Home Alabama". Not only does it contain a number of references to hardships of life and love in the deep South, but also emphasises the longing of many black sharecroppers to head to the north of the States which was very much seen by them as the promised land of opportunity and the American Dream. What is odd is that this song never features on the definitive "King of the Delta Blues Singers" compilation album which is such an essential album for lovers of the blues. That is perhaps because it was not a Robert Johnson composition.
