"Technofan" is the song, which drew me into this album. I like the Clash inspired sound of the music. Matthew Murphy's lyrics have an ironic edge, and on this track he pokes fun at the night life.
"1996" has become my favorite track on the album after repeated listens, the guitar hooks are a true delight.
The album has been criticized for not having enough variety in the songs. A little more variety would help, but you've got to like the speed, which is encapsulated in the rhythm and title of "Girls/ Fast Cars."
I would like to hear a little more good cheer in Murphy's lyrics. It would up the fun quotient. Still, it's worth listening to someone take a shot at self-help in "Walking Disasters." I like how the music shifts into hard rock during "Shumacher the Champagne."
I am looking forward to seeing what happens, when they "Jump Into the Fog" in the future. Comparing love to a pill works better here than it did for Huey Lewis and the News. Good backing vocals, too. The stuttering on "Anti-D" may not make the song as memorable as classics from The Who and Bachman Turner Overdrive, but the band is in the game.
