Never cared much for the A-side, but the first track on the B-side, now that is different. "Dust in the Wind" is a lovely simple tune which conveys the futility of all things - I am always reminded of the closing words to a Christian funeral when I hear this. Yet it is mournful without being melancholy (or should I have those adjectives the other way round?). Yet it never slips into the maudlin.
Whatever, this simple song will charm you. At a time when Kansas were among the leaders of a genre, an offshoot of prog rock, which came to be known as pomp rock most noted for its bombastic and over-the-top theatrical displays of pomposity, it was quite startling that they could produce such a simple, yet beautiful track. It is a pity about the rest of the EP though.
