Samba Soul 70 is a swinging compilation that collects some superb lost tracks recorded in the 1970’s by members of this Brazilian movement. People from Rio and Sao Paulo were taken by the Afro-American movement that was happening in the 60’s; so they wanted to mix the soul and R&B sound into their own Samba style. This is just a taste of what was offered during this creative period. Imagine James Brown living down in Rio for 5 years and hanging with the likes of Joao Gilberto and Caetano Veloso. The result is the refreshing sound of Samba Soul. I would throw names at you except the average person isn’t going to recognize most of these. There are a couple of exceptions though; Gal Costa is here (he was around with Caetano Veloso and Gilberto Gil) as well as Elis Regina who was one of Brazil’s most talented female singers. There are 16 tracks of this Brazilian funk for you to get the dancefloor moving. The album was compiled by Bossacucanova’s DJ Dalua and Ziriguiboom’s (this album’s original record label) Beco Dranoff and Marc Hollander.
