An old soul classic which was given a new lease of life by its use as the theme music to a 1986 film of the same name which achieved some iconic status with the late River Phoenix in the starring role. Written by King along with the prolific Lieber-Stoller partnership, it was originally intended for the Drifters before King recorded it himself. It has subsequently been covered by many artists including John Lennon, Marvin Gaye and even Muhammad Ali. However, no matter how many times it has been covered, Kings version reigns supreme.
Its appeal lies in its simplicity. Piano led and slow in tempo, it is something which is easy to remember and sing along with. And therein lies its true appeal. It is just too good to ignore. A hit when originally released in 1961, it was also subsequently a hit when re-released in later years.
