Putumayo has been creeping into the territory of innovator label Six Degrees the past little while. What Six Degrees has been doing is putting out some very cool world / electronica releases and I think Putumayo, who had at one time cornered the market on world music, has been feeling a push to do the same thing. World Lounge is a perfect example of the potential that Putumayo has when it comes to this type of thing. The liner notes start off with a bit of a clarification of what a “lounge consists of. “The lounge is a mythical place in popular culture, one that has endured and transformed over time from tacky tiki rooms to trendy downtempo hangouts. Putumayo then takes it one step further by providing the perfect soundtrack for a Global Lounge. There are artists from literally every corner of the earth that have contributed to this downtempo masterpiece. It is one of those compilations that it’s hard to just point out one good song because if you mentioned one you would have to mention them all. Needless to say if you like global music and are hip to the lounge lifestyle then World Lounge is a perfect fit for you. Putumayo is not out of the running yet for the coolest world music label.
