World Playground 2 is one of the better world music compilations that has come out in the last while. There is a super diverse array of artists from all styles and countries. Putumayo may have made a mistake marketing this as a kids album because adults will get complete enjoyment out of it as well. When I think of kids albums I think of Fred Penner and he doesn’t provide much enjoyment for parents. I’m sure that kids would take a lot away from World Playground though. The first release ended up with the 1999 Gold Award in the National Parents Publications awards. The one thing that is child oriented is the liner notes. Putumayo tries to get the kids interested in the instruments and cultures they are listening to. This album starts off with the always consistent Baka Beyond with a track entitled “Adukbe that gets things moving. Familiar artists here included Toots & the Maytals with their “Freedom Train and Miriam Makeba with her award winning song “Pata Pata 2000. There are other artists from Trinidad, Canada, Columbia, Spain, Mexico, Algeria, and India. As you can see it is a well rounded compiliation and rest assured the songs are fun and exciting instilling a “World is a playground feeling.
