Primus use their first release in a decade, Green Naugahyde, to share their thoughts on Chinese manufacturing, Lee Van Cleef, and commercial salmon fishing. This most recent release sounds a lot like Primus with some interesting musical asides.
Theres the sort of goofy lyrics one has come to expect from Les Claypool, but musically, it sounds as though the band spent some quality time with Frank Zappa and The Mothers of Invention early catalog. There are a few tracks that structurally barely qualify as songs, but the quality of the musical noodling is still impressive. This is sound as an art collage.
Jillys on Smack sets up as an extensive jam for the players. "Tragedy's a'Comin" is another standout track that sounds like Primus fans have come to expect. Moron TV brings us Claypool railing against the dumbest and most popular of common denominators tying us together, reality TV. For once he sees fit to be angry about something dumb, rather than embrace it as his own.
Longtime fans will not be disappointed. Whether or not newcomers will be swayed and converted into followers remains yet to be seen.
