Once Muddy Waters had picked up an electric guitar, the face of blues music was changed forever. One of Waters' contemporaries, Howlin' Wolf, began pushing the boundaries further and thereby began to presage the rise of hard rock in the mid to late sixties. "Smoke Stack Lightning'" was a much heavier song than other contemporary releases by blues artists and is full of the emotion and feeling which characterised and is ideally suited to the distinctive voice of Howlin' Wolf. Covered many times by later, largely white, rhythm and blues acts, most notably the Yardbirds, this remains a classic example of great fifties electric blues.
