Talk about a surprise! Of all the singles which could have been a hit in 1972, who would have this would have been one of them? Hawkwind took their spacey sound and their spaced out minds and stormed the charts with this number about spaceships and space flight. Maybe it was the times - the Apollo programme was still going and people were beginning to look towards interplanetary flight. Maybe it was the last hurrah of a bunch of slowly ageing hippies for whom this sound reminded them of the Summer of Love. Maybe it was just some bandwagon somewhere.
Still, it was nice to know that just occasionally the sterile charts could be thrown into chaos by a rank outsider. It is just a pity that this didn't happen more often.
