The Damned kept on playing punk in the seventies British fashion long after everyone else had given up. I had left the Damned behind a few years before but returned to them for this wonderful cover of the old Barry Ryan number. Dave Vanian had by now had a number of years to perfect his Gothic baritone style of singing and it works at its best here. Indeed, truth be told, Vanian was always a better singer when singing someone else's songs, probably because he knew what he had to copy and could make fewer mistakes. And the rest of the band had matured to an extent that they were hardly recognisable as the same outfit who three-chord thrashed their way across "New Rose" nearly a decade earlier.
