I was one of the late bloomers with Beachwood Sparks. Friends and acquaintances alike told me that I had to check this band out. So when so many people seem to be clamoring to get their hands on this sophomore album I had to see what all the fuss was about. Upon investigation (repeated listens) I discovered the charm that this SoCal band is revisiting the territory where Gram Parsons had been so many years ago. There is more to the band than just re-inventing country (again). Beachwood Sparks seem to have mastered the twangy side of rock and country and bring it to a new crowd of Belle & Sebastian fans. This may sound like an easy feat but if you think about the fans of Belle you will notice that they shy away from anything that is remotely twangy. The Sparks remove that fear and present the Gram Parsons style of country to a whole new audience. Oh yeah, they’re amazing songwriters too. Move over Lambchop, you may have a new contender for the alt-country throne.
