"Duh-duh-duh DA-duh-DA duh-duh-duh!"
You've heard it. You may not know where it came from but the riff to "Mannish Boy" (misspelt "Manish Boy" on its first release) has got to be one of the most copied riffs in the history of rock and roll. Everyone from Joe Walsh ("Rocky Mountain Way") to David Bowie ("The Jean Genie") has used it. The song itself was retitled to "I'm a Man" and was covered by bands as diverse as the Yardbirds and Dr. Feelgood.
The secret of the song's success lies in its pure simplicity. A salutary tale of boy becoming man and the consequences of that change is put across that wonderful riff, and off it goes. Wave after wave of musicians may have altered the title or co-opted that riff, but it is still that beautifully simple song Muddy wrote.
