There is something sublime about musicians that go by one name aliases. Destining them to make the world take notice. Singer, songwriter Vieem is also no exception.
After reading a review from another blog that featured her first single "If Only You'd Know". I decided to investigate the rest of the album. Written and recorded by the New York artist, from her debut Be It Hated. The music is undeniably well-penned. The double hook chorus stays embedded in your head like ear candy. A distinctively produced video was also shot. Garnering reviews for its original concept.
Upon exploring the entire album. What is clear is that the album plays with multifarious genres. Whilst being unpredictable and spontaneous, yet staying attached to the alternative pop realm. The production on many of the songs seems to differ throughout , but instead of working against it, gives it both a retro vibe (particularly on Amidst The Mist') and a fresher, more modern effect Be It Hated and If Only You'd Know.
'Be It Hated' is not exactly what you would expect from an independently produced album. Vieem exhibits gumption often accredited to well known musicians. She proves that she can run with the best of them. The album is full of slow, mid, and up-tempo hits that could easily find their way to charted radio. A rather august exploit considering this is her first time out. It is nice to finally hear something that isn't rehashed and is genuine. There are many stand out tracks to include the stirring heart-strung ballads- 'If Only You'd Know' and 'The Miserable Wallflower'. These songs display her vulnerability and vocal sensibilities. But each song is different. At first listen, the opening track "Totum Hole" creeps up on you with paramount tones and subtle momentum. Suggesting the rest of the album inhabits this heavier theme, though surprisingly does not. 'Why A Reason' is more upbeat in tonality, packing a punch of soaring spirit (totally a pop song). 'Amidst the mist is more arcane in tenor. A bit sultry and seductive, having a throwback appeal that showcases Vieems vocal prowess.
One would never expect to hear a folk infused track at the end of this kind of record. Expect to hear it on Be It Hated. Dedicated as an homage song, Willow and Weeds" is far more different in comparison then any other track on the album. At first glance, this song might take you off guard with its folksy nuances and slight twang in her voice. Continuously growing on you with each listen. A great piece in its own entity that crosses over with its style bending appeal. Its descriptive and pure nature is disarming enough to make you come to appreciate it.
The prodigy of the album is the title track itself, Be It Hated. This immensely high impact, drum riddled, electric guitar based track assaults the senses. The up-tempo, in your face attitude of the song is like dropping a bomb of napalm. Vieem's voice fits like a glove. Proving that she is certainly in her element. An awakening knockout from beginning to end. 'Be It Hated' could easily be the track that launches Vieem into the stratosphere. Commanding a presence that is too vanguard, it is easy to understand why the record is named after this juggernaut.
Overall, 'Be It Hated' is a great album and a strong debut. It really merits your attention. Bare in mind that the record is self produced. Don't expect top notch production or mastering. Either way, the goods are definitely there.
