In spite of reputations and legends, the first ever punk single was the Damned's "New Rose" and it deserves recognition for that alone. There was nothing sophisticated or elegant about this. Yet "New Rose" is also a good track in its own right and certainly the highlight of the band's first album. Start with those slightly plaintiff introductory lines (borrowed from the Shangri-La's)
"Is she really going out with him?"
giving way to thunderous drumming and that marvellous, frenetic, we-recorded-this-in-the-garage-in-one-go sound. It was in its day absolute magic and for me set the tone for a generation to come. The B-Side was a cover of the Beatles' "Help" played at 100 miles an hour, a reminder to the Fab Four perhaps that their days were done.
