In spite of reputations and legends, the first ever punk single was the Damned's " New Rose" and it deserves recognition for that alone. There was nothing sophisticated or elegant about this. Yet "New Rose" is also a good track in its own right and certainly the highlight of the band's first album. Start with those slightly plaintiff introductory lines (borrowed from the Shangri-La's)
"Is she really going out with him? "
giving way to thunderous drumming and that marvellous, frenetic, we-recorded-this-in-the-garage-in-one-go sound. It was in its day absolute magic and for me set the tone for a generation to come. The B-Side was a cover of the Beatles' " Help" played at 100 miles an hour, a reminder to the Fab Four perhaps that their days were done.
