That balalaika (bouzouki?) may be a bit of cliche (island, Greek island, Greek instrument) but it does little to detract from this song overall. Up-tempo to a deceptive degree, this is all about pain, regret and bitterness. Loaded with a succession of miserable images, the bouncy feel of the music only serves to heighten the intensity of the pain the singer feels. This is a song about misery, possibly even a misery that will never end; not happy memories; and certainly not promotional backing music for the Crete tourist board. Yet there are still people who think this is a happy tune. Just goes to show. People don't listen.
