Have you ever been in the position where someone praises a song and you have no idea what they are talking about, and then some time later you realise that the praised song is indeed one you know and love yourself. The connection was never made in your own head between the title and the music. Well, if there is one song that epitomises this for me it is "Proud Mary". It had never occurred to me that Creedence Clearwater Revival had done a song about an old paddle steamer called Proud Mary, a song with which I was well familiar and indeed quite fond of. I'm not going to go into raptures about it. It is a good song, one that it is virtually impossible to dislike. Fogerty found himself a great riff and a solid lyrical refrain and he stuck to it. Good for him.
