This is Shalabi Effect’s second album and exploration into Middle-Eastern influenced psychedelia. Experimentation is a great way to describe what Shalabi Effect is going for. The focus is on atmosphere instead of actual compositions in the musical sense of the word. The Trial of St Orange is made up of six tracks that almost clocks in at an hour. Quite a bit shorter than their 131-minute epic that they introduced themselves to the public with. Shalabi Effect is made up of Sam Shalabi, Anthony Seck, Alexandre St-Onge, and Will Eizlini. The texture on this album is thick and is able to keep the listener interested even if there is little or no structure apparent. The most invigorating song is “Mr. Titz which borders on a techno track. One of those tracks that stands out and provides disillusioned thoughts about the band. Shalabi is strictly meant for background music. Anything more and it would go right over the listeners head. Oh, and the package is glamorously glossy with the type of packaging we are coming to expect from Alien8.
