With a name like the Buttless Chaps it is hard to take this band from Victoria, BC seriously. After a brief listen it is also hard to take the band serious. It sounds like cheap cheesy lounge country music that you might hear from a karaoke bar in the middle of Nebraska. Upon further absorption of their third album I start to see the light and what this foursome is all about. Clarity at last. You would think that this band is a fairly conventional alt-country band but alas, they are very inventive and aren’t afraid of what people will think or say. The charm with this band is that they somehow mix a retro feel onto the Americana genre and not in a Gram Parsons sense. Take “In My Fingertips for instance, the band almost sounds like an 80’s synth pop band. Yes, in the vein of all that cheese but somehow the Buttless Chaps pull it off so it is almost cool. I think it has a lot to do with lead vocalist Dave Gowan’s charismatic style. He is not flamboyant but comes across modest. Try and catch the Buttless Chaps on one of their flavorful shows.
