The Smiths were, for some people, at their peak around now. "The Queen is Dead" was an album released to critical acclaim and "There Is a Light that Never Goes Out" was a single released from it. It was a good choice for it was by far the best track on the album. It was in many ways the typical Smiths song: morose and yet romantic, without being in the least bit maudlin. Even when, as they did, the Smiths added strings and a flute, they still managed to get away with it to an extent that other bands of the time could never have managed. But why oh why did they (or their record company) rip everyone off with the same song on the B-Side?
