One of the better releases from Siouxsie and the Banshees, "Israel" was a sort of potted Judaism in four and half minutes. The plaintiff wailing Siouxsie puts in for the refrain made this a cut above the recent singles the band had issued and heralded a brief return to the singles charts. The trouble was that it came out at a time when Israel (the country) had blotted its copybook somewhat (and was to go on and do more damage to its reputation), so the single never did as well as the melody and the hook probably warranted. Still, it is worth a good listen every now and again.
