Steely Dan were up there with the Eagles and the Doobie Brothers - on my personal hate list of bands from the seventies whose sound I destested. OK, they were not in the same league of awfulness as commercial British shit which began to flood the airwaves in the early seventies, but Steely Dan were part of a trend of soft rock which was designed to make "rock" acceptable to your parents.
Perhaps in retrospect I was a little harsh. But Steely Dan were a band which never really appealed to me. Still, at the club I used to go to this got a lot of play time and I suppose that is why I have a fondness of sorts for it when I cannot take anything else of their work.
