Neko Case must have a thing for lying on cold surfaces. On her last album, Furnace Room Lullaby, she was flat on the floor in what looked like an alley. On the Blacklisted cover she is sprawled out on pavement behind a van and on the back cover, she is laying in some hay with a bunch of deer. I won't hold it against her though. With Blacklisted, Neko Case has moved into a new territory of fantastic female crooning country. Her vocals are forefront in the mix making them even more enjoyable. Tempos are fairly diverse but they don't really pick up all that much. It's not that all the songs are downers, for instance "Lady Pilot" has a very unique shuffle sound to it. One of the coolest things about Blacklisted is that Case has enlisted the help of the Giant Sand boys. The way Howe, Joey and John play add a spooky feel to the album, giving it a ghost-like quality. Blacklisted is album for late at night. Lonliness would help too. This is Neko's finest moment. Did I mention that she wrote all but two songs on this album? Very impressive.
