These days, many people will not recall much about Tina Turner before she became the mini-skirt wearing granny with the rocking voice. Yet, before that she had enjoyed (perhaps not the right word) a long and illustrious career with her then husband, Ike Turner, whose own roots stretched back to the early days of the Chicago blues scene in the fifties. Those who do remember Tina Turner from those days will also recall, no doubt with disgust, the appalling brutality she suffered at the hands of Ike who felt that his wife was eclipsing him in the fame stakes.
"Nutbush City Limits" was one a string of singles the duo put out which helped redefine black music (apologies, but though I hate that term I can think of no other which is not even worse) in the early seventies in the wake of Motown soul and before the sterility of disco. With its foot-stomping beat and characteristic Tina Turner vocal performance, this was probably the highlight of the duo's career.
