Modern English were, curiously, far better appreciated in the United States than they were in their native UK. Perhaps its appearance in an American Burger King advert had something to do with it. In fact this was a pretty good post punk single which came out a time when indie music in the UK was dominated by post-punk to an extent that few genres have achieved since.
Yet whenever I listen to anything by Modern English apart from "I Melt with You" I can begin to understand why they may have been overlooked in this country. Truth is, this is the best thing they ever did by a long way. A great jangly opening riff sets the song off, and the words are intelligible and even memorable (unlike a lot of Modern English stuff). Perhaps the band would have done better if they had made more like this one.
