That the Flatmates never made it big could be one of the great musical mysteries of the eighties. After all, the Primitives, who had a similar sound, did make some impact later in the same year. They had everything going for them, or so it seemed, and yet they disintegrated before they could produce a full length album. "Shimmer" was their biggest hit, reaching number 2 in the UK Indie Charts. It has a catchy hook and successfully manages to combine the Goth and jangle pop elements of indie music which were prevalent at the time. However, that marriage was always going to be an uneasy one and it rarely manages to come off well, and "Shimmer" was one of the few tracks where it did work. Sadly, the production quality, which was never the best, has rendered this horribly dated now. Still, it is reminiscent of a time in British music and is worth tracking down, even if you cannot listen to it all that often any more.
