Alan Charing is no rookie when it comes to making decent albums. On his bio, Alan states that he’s “Gonna Change My Name To Cotton, And Move Down To The South. So that’s just what he did. Now known as A.C. Cotton Alan is in his next stage of rootsy songwriting. Half Way Down was recorded and produced by Luther Russell who has also been in charge with the Freewheelers and Richmond Fontaine. The value of having Luther’s talents is readily apparent upon first listen. Alan is a great musician and when a musician is hooked up with a great producer, good things happen. There is no reason why AC Cotton wouldn’t be played alongside of Tom Petty and Wallflowers. He is able to mix hard driving rave-ups with mellower ballad type songs. Some tracks just demand a shot of whiskey to go along with especially “Lucky Thirteen, a track with just enough twang to emote the right feelings. Once you have relaxed with your whiskey, Cotton gets you up to party with “Santiago, probably the albums best track. I haven’t heard any of Alan’s other work but if it’s half as good as this then it’s worthwhile picking up.
