Songs about masturbation abound throughout the popular music catalogue. But most of these are beating the meat from the male point of view. Rare indeed are songs celebrating the stroking the head of the canoe driver from the female point of view. Leave it to Aussie pop rockers the Divinyls to make up for the shortfall. "I Touch Myself" could be mistaken for nothing else. And yet, it is a catchy pop song with a clever hook. Vocalist Christina Amphlett manages to avoid becoming either pompous or comic with just enough heavy breathing to sound convincing. Not surprisingly, this got banned by the radio stations most everywhere, though I did hear it surface as part of the soundtrack to a film I watched recently. Can't remember which one.
It may seem odd but there are still people out there who think this song was first performed by Blondie (?)
