Michael J. Sheehy is back for another solo album. Ill Gotten Pains is Sheehy’s sophomore solo effort after the demise of his brilliant Dream City Film Club. While this album isn’t as immediately apparent as his debut, it does possess charms that are revealed with repeated listens. Sheehy has quite a dark voice similar to Nick Cave’s but he also has a great falsetto he releases on a few glorious tracks like the longing “Love Insane. He proves his songwriting prowess with tracks like “Some People Love To Get Hurt in which he sings about living in a victim culture. If you were a Dream City Film Club fan you may be surprised at what you find with Sheehy’s solo material. Sort of like when Mark Lanegan escaped the confines of Screaming Trees. Michael J. Sheehy has soul and has bared it all on Ill Gotten Pains.
