It's not up to the level of Fantasies. Although it is a tall order for Metric to follow up on a near masterpiece.
The first two cuts "Artificial Nocturne" and "Youth Without Youth" are pretty solid. The former has some good lyrics, and is a good setup for the latter. Both songs have gritty lyrics, but "Youth" thrives more with an ode to rebellion.
"Breathing Underwater" works, too.
Emily Haines' singing is good throughout. There's an intriguing addition for nostalgia and new wave buffs with Lou Reed helping with the singing on "The Wanderlust."
A cut like "Lost Kitten" starts out promising with a decent hook," but there isn't enough there to work for 3:16.
"The Void" is one of those songs, which sounds better after a few listens.
A song, which may be in the running for the best song on the album is the title cut. The band is better, when it speeds up the tempo. This is done to some extent on "Clone" but not enough, and the song is a little too long at 5:13.
But a band doesn't live on speed alone. There's a beauty to "Nothing But Time."
I'd still like to hear more songs on the level of "Sick Muse," "Front Row,"and "Stadium Love."
