There is an old and abiding adage that people like to toss around when they make copies of something once wonderful: “everything old is new again.” And it is, when it’s new—when it’s created with purpose and when the artists have something to say. This isn’t the case with Field Music’s fourth full-length album, Plumb; instead of being interesting, rich and dynamic it is a throwaway that rests squarely on the shoulders of the giants that came before: Huey Lewis, Billy Joel and Prince.
And it didn’t have to be this way—brothers Peter and David Brewis are exceptionally talented musicians, the album is produced with precision and the sound is crisp and clean. Plumb's only real downfall is that it consistently feels like it’s trying too hard. “Eloquence is overrated”, the Brewis brothers sing, and they may just be right. The excellent 'From Hide and Seek to Heartache' is a glimpse of what could have been—beautifully simple, straightforward, and competent rock and roll. And most importantly, it would have been honest.
