Brigitte Demeyer is about to drop her sophomore album, Nothing Comes Free. Her debut album impressed me to no ends and this one doesn’t break any new ground but it is up to the standard she set on her debut. The marvelous thing about Brigitte is that she writes 90% of her own music and they are quality songs that could easily become hits by other artists. Her voice is similar to Sheryl Crow or Bonnie Raitt. Her guitar playing is on par with the latter of those two. Think of a mellower Sheryl with one foot planted more firmly in roots music. Brigitte’s voice is one of her biggest assets next to her songwriting. Nothing Comes Free is one of those albums that years down the road musicians will be reaching for to pull songs to cover from. Her songs are very introspective and flow better than a lot of the mainstream country/folk music that’s out there. Demeyer will get recognition if albums of this quality keep flowing out of her.
