Stack OLee, aka Stagger Lee, was despite whan you may think, a real person - Stagger Lee Shelton - and his murder of Billy Lyons passed into black American folklore and became the subject of many a song. Mississippi John Hurt lent his own distinctive finger picking style to this version from 1929. Hurt was a part time musician who spent more time sharecropping as playing guitar. It was only in 1963 that he was discovered and taken to Washington and recorded for the National Library of Congress. His influence since then has been enormous and his songs have been the subject of many covers. Though this crackly old recording from 1929 still outdoes the covers.
