With a peculiar falsetto voice and some of the more intricate and studied guitar playing, Tommy Johnson stood out among his blues contemporaries. Active in the late 1920s, " Canned Heat Blues" was probably his most famous recording. Named and about an illegal still for preparing super strength alcohol, it gave its name to the band of the same name. When he was recording he was probably among the most well known of all delta blues musicians. The story concerning Robert Johnson and selling his soul to the Devil was originally told about Tommy Johnson and the two may have been mixed up due to their common surname. But Tommy was a born guitarist and used to delight audiences by playing the guitar between his knees, behind his head (thats right, Jimi) and throwing it in the air.
