The PEI-native releases her third full-length album to much acclaim, getting noted in such faraway press as USAToday and the Boston Globe. Folk magazines are giving glowing reviews to Cousins stunning voice. We Have Made A Spark is an ambitious album that takes it’s drive from knowing that right now is an excellent time to be a solo female artist with a deep throaty sound. It’s well-positioned. It’s a little bit country, a little bit rock ‘n’ roll. There’s a little bit of Adele, a little bit of Feist. Probably at least a little bit of Cousins, too, but I wish there was more of her in it. Sometimes she wanders down the same lonely, folksy trails as Kathleen Edwards and it’s hard to tell them apart. Which is a shame because the Cousins that does emerge, sometimes from behind a piano, but often with a guitar, appears as a strong-willed albeit lonely woman, broken-hearted, but resilient. Clearly she has a story to tell and enough of a knack with a tune and a turn of phrase that she doesn’t really need to shade things to sound like someone else. I hope she gets the notice she deserves because, of course, it all boils down to that wonderful voice.
