You can't hold a good song down, and "Respect" is a damn good song. Many prefer Otis Redding's version, but not me for Aretha puts in a fine vocal performance on this one. Written by Noel Redding of the Jimi Hendrix Experience this has a strong gospel feel to it, something with which Aretha would have been very familiar. The principal difference between Aretha and Otis's version is that while Otis begs for respect, Aretha demands it! This is a real footstomper and defines everything that is good about soul music, for there is a hell of a lot of soul in this.
