A standard 12-bar blues classic recorded by many different blues artists (not to mention white rockers) over the years, "See See Rider" was first recorded by Gertrude Pridgett, aka Ma Rainey, in 1925. The song is reputedly named after a former slave who played a one string fiddle and was one of the originators of Delta Blues. Alternatively, it is about a woman of loose morals.

Ma Rainey's deep and soulful, almost masculine voice is perfectly suited to the tale. The moaning style of signing was derived from older folk traditions and Rainey was able to incorporate it into blues singing. The song also features a very young Louis Armstrong in the horn section.

Sadly, there is unlikely ever to be a remaster of this classic so crackly old 78's are all we have. Paramount, the recording company, went out of business in 1935 due to the Great Depression. All their masters were sold for scrap metal.
