For not knowing David Dondero before his latest album, Shooting At The Sun With A Water Gun, I would venture a guess that he is a wanderer. One of those people who has a hard time planting roots and staying one place for long. You may ask why and I would tell you that before you even delve into the lyrics on Water Gun you can hear a longing for a different place, different scenery. Then once you get into the lyrics you can be pretty much guaranteed that Dondero at least longs for a different place or different scenery. Listen to the longing blues track “This World Is Not My House and when he states “I can’t feel at home in this world anymore you sense his discomfort. Water Gun is a fine album. It is one of those albums that you hate to love. The darkness is sometimes overwhelming but somehow reassuring just the same. One track that really stands out for me is “The Real Tina Turner in which David actually admits eavesdropping on conversations to get ideas for songs. Dondero actually overheard someone stating she was a “Real Tina Turner in my time…you know… a real back-seater. This a brilliant album that is pieces together with a bit of heartache and determination. David Dondero could be though of as a troubadour for the punk generation who is looking for something a bit different.
