Let's face it, PEI's biggest music export to the rest of Canada is probably "Bud The Spud". The island quartet Boxer The Horse seem driven to blow that perception away with their new album French Residency.

There's no real trick to what Boxer The Horse do. They make fuzzy, often clunky rockers. Unlike some bands, they understand that full throttle isn't always necessary. In fact, holding back some can help make an even bigger impact when they do let loose ("Bridge To The USA)".

Their songs aren't sentimental (despite a Steve McQueen reference), but they are honest and no nonsense.

Isaac Neily lays down some of the strongest guitar work that's come out of the east coast in quite some time. He delivers some tasty tasty riffage on "Rattle Your Cage", before going on to make his own Mascis moments on "Karen Silkwood".

At times, like on "Sentimental Oriental" and "Song For T-Rex", lead singer Jeremy Gaudet's vocals bear an uncanny resemblance to those of slacker king Stephen Malkmus. The difference is, Gaudet is supported by a strong band behind him. It's enough to make one wonder how good Malkmus could be if he paid attention to his arrangements.

Do yourself (and the province of Prince Edward Island) a favour and pick yourself up a copy of French Residency.
