Ethel Waters was one of the pioneers of jazz blues crossovers. Am I Blue, which featured the Dorsey brothers, was her biggest hit. The song is remarkable for it displays Waters incredible vocal range and ability. Most of the song is sung in a bluesy almost throaty style, and then becomes light and airy at the choruses. Her voice alternately soars and scuttles along and she is able to vary the timing and the tone at will. This is, whether you like the song or not (and yes, it is the same one Barbara Striesand covered in the film Funny Lady), you have got to admire Waters in credible vocal talent.
