"Handbags and Gladrags" is one of those songs which seems to have been covered by others, others who have produced the definitive version. The Charlatans spring to mind. Well, this was the definitive version. Back in the days when Rod Stewart had some credibility and was a young blues rocker on the London scene, "Handbags and Gladrags" was one of his best pieces. His gravelly voice lends a certain amount of pathos to this essentially melancholy song. The lyrics are surprisingly good, considering some of Rod's later work which seemed to concentrate too much on getting into some girls knickers. This is how I wish to remember Rod Stewart not as the laughable old roue who is still desperately trying to be relevant to audiences whose only knowledge of him is as the father of that leggy blonde on a catwalk somewhere.
