Although "Hound Dog" is my favourite all time Elvis Presley track, I have to say that Big Mama Thornton's earlier blues version at times knocks it into a cocked hat. Thornton has a superb voice for this, and brings alive the scheming rat of the title in a way in which Elvis does not. Elvis may still have the edge in terms of the raw energy which characterised the early rock and roll era, but Big Mama Thornton has the voice.
This was actually the first hit written by Jerry Lieber and Mike Stoller and it was clearly intended for a female perspective the hound dog sniffing round her door is surely rebuffed. Elvis managed to carry it off from the male perspective simply because he had the energy and the polish. Oh, choices choices! It is hard for me to pick which version I prefer as both have their merits and their high points.
