"Whiskey in the Jar" is a traditional Irish folk song which only came to be released as a single as Phil Lynott and Eric Bell were messing around in the studio getting stoned and playing some old blues and folk melodies. And this one just happened to click. Rather untypical of the rest of Thin Lizzy's output, it nevertheless became a big hit in the UK a year after its release.
It is an oddly haunting song which Lynott sings with just the right amount of tiredness and disillusionment. The story of the thief whose courage from the booze he drinks is familiar enough, but Thin Lizzy give it a distinctive edge. The B-side is more like what you would expect from Thin Lizzy and is a presage of what was to come from the band later in the decade.
