Peetie Wheatstraw was the name adopted by William Bunch when he moved to St Louis in the 1920's. The name seems deliberately chosen to conjure up images of the folk blues of the deep South. Wheatstraw usually played piano on his songs and accompanied other musicians on a number of recordings. "Gangsters' Blues" was one of his later recordings, by which time he had almost settled into a familiar style. In some ways it can be said to represent the acme of that style, almost jazz but still the blues. His signature catchphrase "ooh, well, well" appears and marks this out as one of Wheatstraw's own
