You may have heard of the jam band Leftover Salmon and if you have you will recognize the name of Drew Emmitt. He is the founder of Leftover Salmon and with Freedom Ride he makes the move to a solo career. With the success (relatively speaking) of 1999’s Nashville Sessions with guest appearances of the McCoury’s Drew Emmitt was given a crash course in bluegrass and country. He was obviously infected with it because Freedom Ride is a contemporary bluegrass album with some highs and lows. Drew does a killer version of Bob Dylan’s “Tangled Up In Blue that has bluegrass flavour oozing out all over the place while still maintaining the songs integrity. This is the album’s high point and while there are plenty of really great original songs the album doesn’t quite attain a memorable status. His bluegrass style may have a bit of ironing out that needs to happen but Freedom Ride shows great potential. The bouncy chugga-chugga style that he is able to play is really fun. It helps when you have artists such as Sam Bush, Vassar Clemments, Ronnie McCoury, and Randy Scruggs to help out.
