This is what Hip-Hop is all about. J-Live is one of the smoothest rappers to come along in quite some time. This former English teacher shows that he has a handle on the language and one listen to All of the Above will convince you that he has the rhythm down too. Back in 1995 J-Live was picked out in the Source magazine’s “Unsigned Hype column. He then went and recorded “Braggin Writes on his own dime selling a very impressive 13,000 vinyl copies. Due to label shuffling with Polygram his proper debut turned into an impressive underground album that never got proper coverage. That leaves All of the Above as a very deserved release and much anticipated. If you are one of the people following J-Live you will be pleased with what he has thrown together on this album. Rhymes are super smooth and the beats and sampling are superb. When J-Live states that there is not enough craftmanship in today’s hip-hop, he makes up for years of hip-hops neglect. The diversity that J-Live shows here is amazing. He incorporates fun, party time rap as well as politically fuelled rhymes. This is a very necessary hip-hop album. Go buy it.
