There's no really deep message or meaning behind the songs of Calgary rockers The Dudes (I can't believe that name wasn't taken long ago). They sing songs about girls, partying, and rock n' roll.

That pretty much sums up their latest mini-album Barbers, Thieves and Bartenders. The album, which came out earlier this month, is the first of three expected to be released by the band this year.

The record kicks off in a hurry with the good time rock anthem "American Girl". Hot on its heels is "Dress", a song whose subject matter I'm sure you could guess.

The methodical "Rocky Mountain Living" is a muddy, grimy, number with bottom end to spare.

They take a more contemplative turn on "Good Tymz", a track that reminisces about, well, the good times. It doesn't nearly have the impact of it's head-on siblings.

Far from a Bay City Rollers' cover, "Saturday Night" is a tribute to the most important thing to Canadians: hockey. The mid-tempo cut, which includes a reference to the Jets coming back, will earn a place on my annual preseason hockey playlist.

If you listen to music for intellectual stimulation, then The Dudes are certainly not for you. If you listen to music to get into a party mood, then come on down.
